As a story teller, you might be asked to help promote a show or other forms of communicating what is to happen. This is a good means for you to establish a positive repertoire with your client and to also have control over your publicity. This section outlines some tools to help promote an event.

The attached PowerPoint has samples of different items to play for an audience before you go live. This one was used at a local coffee shop prior to an appearance I made. I also had a slide advertising my appearance, but I have left it out of this presentation to protect the innocent. Some pointers on the types of slides are linked to this topic.

2 . 1 . 1 Anagrams
Fairly easy to make. I have a simple one CAT for young children and some more complex ones. I suggest waiting at least 10 seconds before dropping the solution. I also recommend dropping the solution slowly.
I add a picture in the middle after the word as it makes the slide more enjoya ble.

2. 1. 2 A P u n o r J o k e
This is a funny that is displayed to be read. I suggest simple harmless funny questions. I like the Question and answer type as it causes the audience to interact. But just popping up a pun is also fun.
I recommend to keep the font big (40 point) and an appropriate heading. I like bright colors on a dark background. I also recommend at least 10 seconds after the question and before the answer. You should also keep the full question and answer up for at least 20 seconds.
2 . 1 . 3 F ill in th e B la n k
Ala Wheel of fortune or Jeopardy, this one presents a series of blanks and the audience is expected to fill in the letters to find the word, phrase, or puzzle solution.
This one takes a while as you need to create an object for each letter and the letter itself. I like to select random animation for the letters to appear and 3 seconds between letters appearing.
2. 1. 4 U se le ss In fo r m ati on
A bit of trivia or other information that can be presented in a maximum of 3 sentences. I like to animate these word by word.
2 . 1 . 5 A visual
Just a funny photograp h, a comic, or a play on words (see a round to it). This is a visual to show on the screen.
Make sure that people in the back and see it and if it requires reading (like a comic) leave it on screen for a minimum of 15 seconds.

Inspiration for stories, and stories themselves, can come from various sources. This sections lists tools and utilities to help find the seeds for stories, or supporting information for stories.
I consider myself a history buff and contain a wealth of useless information. I do pretty good at trivia and can often bridge facts and fiction into my original stories. I keep my brain stumulated by many of the links I'm sharing here.

Google Alerts is a great tool for finding out current information regarding a topic. In a nutshell, Google alert does a web search for any updates on the Internet based on your keyword search. For example, if you are creating and telling a story on the history of Zanesville, you can create a Google Alert that looks for Zanesville History or Muskingum County History.
Google alert will search the web and send an email with hyper links to you. You can have the alerts come one at a time, once a day, or once a week. After your work is complete, you can then cancel the alert.
I like to keep an active alert on "Story Teller Festival s" to keep abreast of story teller activitie s.
Se e rela ted top ics and do cu me nts

Real Simple Syndication is a protocol that allows update notifications to web sites and blogs to be sent to your email. If you find a location with interesting data that you want to know when it is updated and there is an RSS logo you can sign up for the notification.
You will need a separat e RSS reader, but there are many free ones availabl e.
I can easily get lost into this site. I find it a wonderful mix of information, mental games, quizzes, and links to other resources. I have an RSS feed to this site and get a daily update.

I use multiple browsers, one my favorites is Firefox mainly because it has such a wide variety of plug ins to help a story teller. I have listed a couple of my favorites here.
This is my favorite plug in. It lets me set multiple book marks to visit everyday. From this I am able to see this day in history, facebook, my kids school announcements, etc. I can also set options to look at certain sites on certain days. For example I like the earthweek.com site on Sundays.
This is a screen capture utility that I really like because it captures the entire web page, not just what shows on the screen. Useful when trying to get collateral for stories to read later.

It is possible to have something appear on your PC screen that does not appear on a PC projector. This application allows you to have a teleprompter if you are quoting a long text or other needed aids.
CuePromp ter is a free teleprompt er/autocue service. Your browser works like a teleprompt er -no extra software needed.
Have you ever been just going about your business and suddenly something appears that might be a great idea for a story?
The pocket camcorder is a small handy device for capturing either video or audio ideas without having to carry a camera. The quality of these devices is ok, and the high definition ones, while more expensive - do produce production quality video,
But I am not listing this hear for the quality, I am listing it for its functionality. The pocket camcorder is a nice tool to capture pictures or video to save as story ideas. I have taken it to small towns and see a landmark sign (such as Vallandighamls speech in Mount Vernon, Ohio) and narrated my initial thoughts and the possible try that could be used from it. I can then transfer the thoughts to my PC for reference or to capture for promotional means.

"Jazz" and "Flip" are 2 popular brands of camcorders. They can be found for as little as $60 and up to $200. The high definition costs more. You will also need to purchase a "flash sd card" to store the video. The costs will depend on the size, a 2 Gigabyte card will store around an hour of video and costs around $25.

Se e rela ted top ics and do cu me nts
The portability of being able to talk to people from almost anywhere. I find the built in camera (and video too) of a cell phone useful to capture ideas (like the pocket camcorder, but not as dedicated to the tasks) and it also has many features to help capture ideas. I am not going to even try to advise on types of phones or service plans available.
F or m er ly G ra n d C e nt ra l.
What is nice about this tool is that it is free and can give you a separate phone number for your professional use. It also has a feature that will transcribe voice mail to text to be able to send to your email.
If I get a story idea while driving, I can dial this number, leave a voice mail and then have the text waiting for me in my email when I get home. (I can also have the voice mail in a file to play on my PC).

There are thousands of definitions floating around the Internet on what is a social network and what are the applications that drive social networking. In my humble definition, a social network is a common interface for various communities of a common interest.
It can be completely casual and light hearted or it can be businesslike and serious. But for a story teller, social networks are a way to stay in touch with other storytellers, find story seeds, share success, failure, fears, dreams, goals, and to have fun.
Twitter is the ubiquitous application of 2009. Allowing up to 140 characters to send a "tweet" to your followers. Its a tool that allows you to network, communicate, micro-blog, socialize, quick and frequent answers to tell the world what you are doing.
Twitter is like a cocktail party and small talk - is more like a social club with more revealing and in depth information .
It is nice to have a account to tell people when and where you will be telling stories. You can follow my twitter: santadave.
Se e rela ted top ics and do cu me nts
Another major social media site that is generating a lot of buzz in 2009. Facebook is a social bulletin board where you can link to friends, causes, and companies. Facebook has many games and quizzes that you can share the results with friends and contacts. For story tellers, it is another good source for networking, finding story seeds, and promoting upcoming events.
I too hav e a Fa ceb oo k site : milt dav is.
Twitter is like a cocktail party and small talk - is more like a social club with more revealing and in depth information .

I can be linked to you at Linke din, search for dldavi spmp @gma il.com

5.1 emails
eMail is the foundation of the entire electronic Internet community. eMail is a means of communicating among multiple parties. An email can be a text message with link to web sites or attachments of pictures, applications, or other collateral.
A story teller should have an email address so potential opportunities can contact them any time of day and the event sponsor should also have an email address for the story teller to communicate.
5.2 Survey
Online surveys are a good tool to gather feedback from the audience or organization that hosted the story. I have listed 2 of the most popular survey sites and they have free capabilities as well as premium features.
A survey is a good way to identify your strengths and areas that need improvement. You can offer to send out a follow up survey for the event organizer to help them get feedback on the event. This not only allows you an option to get individual responses, but it also is an offer of good will to a sponsor that might result in a return opportunity.

A blog is basically an online diary. I have one at: http://miltmussin gs.wordpress.co m/ which I plan to update occasionally to add new information about tools and technology.
Most blogs have tools that make it easy to keep content current and to link to people. Many of them have RSS feeds and other notification capabilities. But a word of caution - a blog can get stale fairly quickly, I know I have a few stale blogs lingering on the web. So plan at least an hour a week of care and feeding.
Wordpress www.wordpre ss.com has become a very popular blogging tools. There are many more and the tool isn't that important - Its the content that matters.
